Chapter 17

Gwen and Giselle joined us from the raised platform a minute later, and the six of us stepped onto the elevator. Our little scrap against the walls of the shaft hadn’t compromised its path, thankfully, and Eliot couldn’t keep a wide grin off his face as we descended toward the Nexus. I couldn’t decide whether or not to be pissed at the kids or not, and I uncorked my face from the nanosuit to get some fresh air.

The events of the day flashed back over my mind as the floors of the Tower flashed past us. Gwen unslung two of her rifles as our resident wolfman twitched, dropped down onto all fours, and transformed back into a humanoid form once again. Sweat worked its way off his body as Grump straightened up again with a grimace.

Gwen tossed a rifle to Eliot and Grump and shook her head.

“We’re locking you in the barracks,” she told them.

“Aw,” Eliot muttered. “Seriously?”

“Given the circumstances,” Brandon interjected, “I think they’ve earned themselves a reprieve, don’t you?” He inspected his regenerating arm, and I saw Eliot turn a little green at the sight of it. “Good call on Carolina, by the way.”

I stared at my shredded father figure for a long second.

I’d seen how fast he’d moved, the sheer resilience and strength he’d displayed against the freaks attacking the Tower. It was a far cry from the old cripple who’d hidden himself away in tech labs for most of his life, and I reminded myself for the thousandth time that I was dealing with a practically immortal alien. A smile touched my face at the thought, and Giselle’s eyes flickered to me as I relaxed back against the wall of the elevator.

It felt nice to rest, even if it was for a single minute.

“You think they need help?” Gwen asked.

“Getting bored?” I chuckled.

She shot me a glare. “I’ve been on the bench all day.”

“Give Portia a call, then. I’m sure they’ll be happy for another shooter.”

“Please tell me the rest of you saw sense and barricaded yourselves in,” Giselle told Eliot. “We don’t exactly have time to play hide-and-seek.”

“We slipped out after Impact started freaking,” Grump admitted.

Brandon chuckled quietly as the doors slid open, and we stepped out into the Nexus again. Julia met us with wild eyes, stepped straight past the new recruits, and wrapped me in a suddenly-fierce hug. I caught her around the waist and held her close for a moment as she kissed my neck.

“Don’t you dare leave me behind again,” she said into my chest.

“Needed to move fast, but after that shit you pulled down on the street, I’d be crazy to,” I told her. “How’s everything out east?”

Brandon touched the wide, table-like console and brought up a holographic reference to the battle raging in the shipyard. Flashes of Dingo Squad’s helmets, along with Phenom, Carter, Piper, and Amber’s vision played out on separate screens around the edges of the hologram, and I watched my team tear Tin Men to pieces with focused fire.
