Chapter 17
Gwen and Giselle joined us from the raised platform a minute later, and the six of us stepped onto the elevator. Our little scrap against the walls of the shaft hadnât compromised its path, thankfully, and Eliot couldnât keep a wide grin off his face as we descended toward the Nexus. I couldnât decide whether or not to be pissed at the kids or not, and I uncorked my face from the nanosuit to get some fresh air.
The events of the day flashed back over my mind as the floors of the Tower flashed past us. Gwen unslung two of her rifles as our resident wolfman twitched, dropped down onto all fours, and transformed back into a humanoid form once again. Sweat worked its way off his body as Grump straightened up again with a grimace.
Gwen tossed a rifle to Eliot and Grump and shook her head.
âWeâre locking you in the barracks,â she told them.
âAw,â Eliot muttered. âSeriously?â
âGiven the circumstances,â Brandon interjected, âI think theyâve earned themselves a reprieve, donât you?â He inspected his regenerating arm, and I saw Eliot turn a little green at the sight of it. âGood call on Carolina, by the way.â
I stared at my shredded father figure for a long second.
Iâd seen how fast heâd moved, the sheer resilience and strength heâd displayed against the freaks attacking the Tower. It was a far cry from the old cripple whoâd hidden himself away in tech labs for most of his life, and I reminded myself for the thousandth time that I was dealing with a practically immortal alien. A smile touched my face at the thought, and Giselleâs eyes flickered to me as I relaxed back against the wall of the elevator.
It felt nice to rest, even if it was for a single minute.
âYou think they need help?â Gwen asked.
âGetting bored?â I chuckled.
She shot me a glare. âIâve been on the bench all day.â
âGive Portia a call, then. Iâm sure theyâll be happy for another shooter.â
âPlease tell me the rest of you saw sense and barricaded yourselves in,â Giselle told Eliot. âWe donât exactly have time to play hide-and-seek.â
âWe slipped out after Impact started freaking,â Grump admitted.
Brandon chuckled quietly as the doors slid open, and we stepped out into the Nexus again. Julia met us with wild eyes, stepped straight past the new recruits, and wrapped me in a suddenly-fierce hug. I caught her around the waist and held her close for a moment as she kissed my neck.
âDonât you dare leave me behind again,â she said into my chest.
âNeeded to move fast, but after that shit you pulled down on the street, Iâd be crazy to,â I told her. âHowâs everything out east?â
Brandon touched the wide, table-like console and brought up a holographic reference to the battle raging in the shipyard. Flashes of Dingo Squadâs helmets, along with Phenom, Carter, Piper, and Amberâs vision played out on separate screens around the edges of the hologram, and I watched my team tear Tin Men to pieces with focused fire.
